Welsh Conservatives welcome new Language Commissioner | Comisiynydd yr Iaith newydd ei groesawu gan y Ceidwadwyr Cymraeg

Shadow Welsh Language Secretary Suzy Davies AM has said the appointment of former Assembly Member Aled Roberts as the Commissioner is a “sensible move” but has warned he has fight on his hand to protect the role’s independence.

Mrs Davies, the AM for South Wales West, said: “I thank Meri Huws for her outstanding work and to sincerely congratulate Aled on his appointment. Though we were not in the same party when he was in the Assembly, I always saw him as a valued colleague whose work on the Welsh in Education Strategic Plans has proven to be influential.

“His record of taking a reasonable and proportionate view on Welsh Language policy and legislation will serve him well as Commissioner.

“The Welsh Labour Government would be foolish to abolish the role they themselves created with cross-party support, as it currently plans to, when it can be so ably fulfilled by Aled.”

Dywedodd Ysgrifennydd Cysgodol yr Iaith Gymraeg Suzy Davies AC fod y penodiad o’r cyn Aelod Cynulliad Aled Roberts yn Gomisiynydd yn "symud synhwyrol" ond wedi rhybuddio ei fod gyda brwydr ar ei law i amddiffyn annibyniaeth y rôl.

Fe ddywedodd Mrs Davies, yr AC am Dde Orllewin Cymru: “Yr wyf eisiau diolch Meri Huws am ei gwaith rhagorol a llongyfarch Aled ar ei benodiad. Er nad oeddem yn yr un blaid pan oedd yn y Cynulliad, yr wyf bob amser yn ei weld fel cydweithiwr gwerthfawr pwy wnaeth profi ddylanwad drwy ei waith ar y Cynlluniau Strategol Cymraeg mewn Addysg.

“Bydd ei gofnod o gael barn resymol a chymesur ar bolisi a deddfwriaeth yr Iaith Gymraeg yn wasanaethu'n dda fel Comisiynydd.

“Bydd Llywodraeth Lafur Cymru yn ffôl i ddiddymu'r rôl a grëwyd ganddynt eu hunain gyda chymorth trawsbleidiol cyn yr etholiad nesaf, fel y mae'n bwriadu ar hyn o bryd, pan fydd Aled yn gallu cyflawni ei rôl statudol lawn yn fwy effeithiol.”
