Traffic call made by local representatives | Galwad traffig gan gynrychiolwyr lleol

An Assembly Member and County Councillors have joined forces in calling for action to help with traffic congestion in a suburb of Bridgend.

Suzy Davies AM and the three Welsh Conservative Councillors for Brackla are calling for developers to play their part in improving traffic flow in the area.

The call comes as more houses are set to be built in and near the ward.

Mrs Davies, with Cllrs Tom Giffard, Kay Rowlands, and Aniel Pucella want to see some of the money that housing developers pay to the community to be used to help improve road safety, air quality and active travel.

“Many residents already complain about the traffic congestion around Brackla” said Cllr Giffard.

“The junction at Coychurch Road and Simonston Road in particular can often see traffic build up as residents try to get out.

“At peak times it is not unheard of for residents to wait up to ten minutes. This has meant that people often choose to drive the long way through Brackla to avoid this, both adding to unnecessary traffic in the area and pollution.”

Mrs Davies, the Welsh Conservative AM for South Wales West, and the councillors have suggested that installing a mini roundabout the junction, before the railway bridge, could help with traffic flow and reduce pollution at the same time.

Mrs Davies said “Developers are often required to spend “Section 106” community improvement money to help relieve the impact of developments on local residents.

“Taylor Wimpey are already building 230 houses on the edge of Brackla and Persimmon were then granted conditional consent to build a further 20 houses near this.

“While the development is on the border between Coity and Brackla, it is clear that all these additional houses will lead to more traffic travelling down Simonston Road towards the motorway.

“While the application says that Persimmon will be adding cycle and pedestrian access and facilities, it would be wrong to presume that the development will not also lead to an increase in local traffic.

“Residents would be right to feel that Persimmon should contribute to a mini roundabout at the bottom of Simonston Road to help with traffic flow and congestion.”

Cllr Rowlands said “Since being elected, I have been making complaints to the council about this junction. This route is incredibly dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists, so much that it prevents safe walking access between Brackla and the industrial estate. It is clearly a project that must be on the top of the agenda.”

Cllr Pucella added “I want to make it clear that we are not against the building of homes for local families.  However, when these applications are granted they need to consider the impact they will have on the local community and, where possible, these should be reduced.”

“As councillors we have met with planning officers at the council and made it clear that we can not support any further development in the area without improvements to this junction.

Persimmon were granted permission to build 20 homes on land to the east of the A4061 in September 2018. This followed Taylor Wimpey receiving permission to build 230 houses in October 2016 at land at Brackla Industrial Estate of Wyndham Close.

Mae Aelod Cynulliad a Chynghorwyr Sir wedi ymuno â'i gilydd yn galw am weithredu i helpu tagfeydd traffig mewn maestref ym Mhen-y-bont ar Ogwr.

Mae Suzy Davies AC a'r tri Chynghorydd Ceidwadwyr Cymreig ar gyfer Brackla yn galw am ddatblygwyr i chwarae eu rhan wrth wella llif traffig yn yr ardal.

Daw'r alwad wrth i fwy o dai gael eu hadeiladu i mewn ac yn agos at y ward.

Mae Mrs Davies, gyda'r Cyng. Tom Giffard, Kay Rowlands, ac Aniel Pucella am weld peth o'r arian y mae datblygwyr tai yn ei dalu i'r gymuned i'w ddefnyddio i helpu i wella diogelwch ar y ffyrdd, ansawdd aer a theithio gweithredol.

"Mae llawer o drigolion eisoes yn cwyno am y tagfeydd traffig o amgylch Bracla" meddai'r Cyng Giffard.

"Yn aml, gall y gyffordd yn Heol Coychurch a Heol Simonston weld trafnidiaeth yn cynyddu wrth i drigolion geisio mynd allan.

"Ar adegau brig nid yw'n anhysbys i drigolion aros hyd at ddeg munud. Mae hyn wedi golygu bod pobl yn aml yn dewis gyrru'r ffordd bell trwy Bracla er mwyn osgoi hyn, gan ychwanegu at draffig diangen yn yr ardal a llygredd.

Mae Mrs Davies, AC Ceidwadwyr Cymreig Gorllewin De Cymru, a'r cynghorwyr wedi awgrymu y gallai gosod cylchfan fach y gyffordd, cyn y bont rheilffordd, helpu gyda llif traffig a lleihau llygredd ar yr un pryd.

Dywedodd Mrs Davies "Yn aml mae'n ofynnol i ddatblygwyr wario arian gwella cymunedol" Darn 106 "i helpu i leddfu effaith datblygiadau ar drigolion lleol.

"Mae Taylor Wimpey eisoes yn adeiladu 230 o dai ar ymyl Brackla ac yna rhoddwyd caniatâd amodol i Persimmon i adeiladu 20 o dai arall gerllaw hyn.

"Er bod y datblygiad ar y ffin rhwng Coety a Bracla, mae'n amlwg y bydd yr holl dai ychwanegol hyn yn arwain at fwy o draffig yn teithio i lawr Heol Simonston tuag at y draffordd.

"Er bod y cais yn dweud y bydd Persimmon yn ychwanegu mynediad a chyfleusterau beiciau a cherddwyr, byddai'n anghywir tybio na fydd y datblygiad hefyd yn arwain at gynnydd mewn traffig lleol.

"Byddai preswylwyr yn iawn i deimlo y dylai Persimmon gyfrannu at gylchfan fach ar waelod Simonston Road i helpu gyda llif traffig a thagfeydd."

Dywedodd y Cyng Rowlands "Ers cael ei ethol, rwyf wedi bod yn gwneud cwynion i'r cyngor am y gyffordd hon. Mae'r llwybr hwn yn hynod beryglus i gerddwyr a beicwyr, cymaint ei fod yn atal mynediad cerdded diogel rhwng Bracla a'r ystad ddiwydiannol. Mae'n amlwg yn brosiect y mae'n rhaid ei fod ar frig yr agenda."

Ychwanegodd y Cynghorydd Pucella "Rwyf am ei gwneud yn glir nad ydym yn erbyn adeiladu cartrefi i deuluoedd lleol. Fodd bynnag, pan roddir y ceisiadau hyn, bydd angen iddynt ystyried yr effaith y byddant yn ei chael ar y gymuned leol a, lle bo modd, dylid lleihau'r rhain."

"Fel cynghorwyr, rydym wedi cyfarfod â swyddogion cynllunio yn y cyngor ac wedi ei gwneud hi'n glir na allwn gefnogi unrhyw ddatblygiad pellach yn yr ardal heb wella'r gyffordd hon.

Rhoddwyd caniatâd i Persimmon adeiladu 20 o gartrefi ar dir i'r dwyrain o'r A4061 ym mis Medi 2018. Dilynodd hyn â Taylor Wimpey yn derbyn caniatâd i adeiladu 230 o dai ym mis Hydref 2016 ar dir yn Stad Ddiwydiannol Brackla, Wyndham Close.
