Suzy Davies promoted to new Shadow Education Secretary | Dyrchafiad i Suzy Davies fel Ysgrifennydd Addysg newydd yr wrthblaid

South Wales West Assembly Member Suzy Davies has been appointed to the role of Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education.

The move comes as part of the reshuffle carried out by newly elected Welsh Conservative Leader Paul Davies.

Mrs Davies, who had served as Shadow Minister for Social Services, Culture, Heritage and Welsh Language since 2016 will also keep the Welsh Language brief as part of her new role.

“With Wales still sitting at the bottom of many international league tables when it comes to education, I am not taking this role lightly.

“Since the 2016 Assembly Elections the Welsh Labour Government has been propped up by the sole Lib Dem who has, in doing so, had free rein over the Education portfolio during this period.

“With potential school closures presently taking place in parts of Wales, including in my own region of South Wales West, it is crucial that the funding and legislation decisions taken by Welsh Government are fully scrutinised, as well as how that is interpreted by different councils.”

Mrs Davies, herself a Welsh speaker, having learned as an adult, added “Welsh Language is an important part of education as it gives our young people added skills to meet a growing demand in the work place.

Mae Suzy Davies, Aelod Cynulliad Rhanbarthol Gorllewin De Cymru wedi’i phenodi’n Ysgrifennydd Cabinet yr Wrthblaid dros Addysg.

Hyn ar ôl i Paul Davies, arweinydd newydd y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, ad-drefnu ei gabinet.

Bydd Mrs Davies, a fu’n Weinidog yr Wrthblaid dros Wasanaethau Cymdeithasol, Diwylliant, Treftadaeth a’r Gymraeg ers 2016, hefyd yn cadw’r briff Iaith Gymraeg fel rhan o’i dyletswyddau newydd.

“Gyda Chymru’n parhau ar waelodion y cynghreiriau addysg rhyngwladol, dyw hon ddim yn rôl hawdd o bell ffordd.

“Ers etholiadau’r Cynulliad 2016, mae unig aelod y Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol wedi helpu i gynnal Llywodraeth Lafur Cymru, ac wrth wneud hynny, wedi cael rhwydd hynt i lywio’r portffolio Addysg yn ystod y cyfnod hwn.

“Gyda rhagor o ysgolion mewn rhannau o’r wlad, gan gynnwys yn fy rhanbarth i o Orllewin De Cymru, mewn perygl o gau, mae’n bwysig ein bod ni’n craffu’n llawn ar benderfyniadau ariannu a deddfu Llywodraeth Cymru, yn ogystal â dehongliad cynghorau gwahanol o hyn.”

Ychwanegodd Mrs Davies, sy’n siarad Cymraeg ar ôl dysgu’r iaith fel oedolyn, “Mae’r Gymraeg yn rhan bwysig o addysg gan ei bod yn rhoi sgiliau ychwanegol i’n pobl ifanc ateb y galw cynyddol yn y gweithle.
