Ford plant urgent questions asked of Welsh Government | Gofynnwyd cwestiynau brys am ffatri Ford i Lywodraeth Cymru

Urgent questions have been raised with Welsh Government (Tuesday 15th January 2019) about the speculated job losses at the Ford plant in Bridgend.

Suzy Davies, Welsh Conservative AM for South Wales West, raised specific issues with Welsh Government’s Economy Minister, calling for more information about the support already given by Welsh Government, as well as possible assistance for the future.

“Three years ago we were told that Welsh Government had supported investment in the plant in return for a minimum of five years of secure employment for a specific number of workers” said Mrs Davies.

“Ford have received over £42 million worth of support from Welsh Government over the last 15 years – on what conditions? How many jobs have actually been secured on the back of assistance which followed the threat to the plant in 2016. Despite asking for details since then, Welsh Government has fallen short of actually telling us the number of jobs their support has guaranteed.”

Mrs Davies also pushed the Economy Minister over whether the production of the new Dragon engine, made for Jaguar Land Rover, was safe into the future following concerns that Jaguar Land Rover is set to cut production of cars in the UK.

“It is reassuring to hear that the Dragon engine can be modified for use in new hybrid vehicles” she said.

“However, only about 125,000 units are being manufactured, half the original expectation. It could increase to 250,000 units but what use is ‘could’ when there is a real fear is job losses.

“However, the Minister confirmed my assertion that Welsh Government is backing a Bridgend bid to bring production of a brand new 4x4 vehicle to the town.”

The Economy Minister confirmed that Welsh Government are in talks for Projeckt Grenadier, a plan for a new off road vehicle designed by international chemical and energy company INEOS, which is planned to fill the gap left by the Land Rover Defender which ceased production in 2016.

“If we bring production of that vehicle to Bridgend, it will provide work for hundreds upon hundreds of people and potentially thousands in the supply chain. A decision will be made next month” said the Minister.

“This could be great news” commented Mrs Davies.  “But we still need to be able to tell our constituents what Welsh Government are planning to give to INEOS, what they expect to get for that money, and exactly what ‘work for hundreds upon hundreds of people’ will actually look like.”

Codwyd cwestiynau brys gyda Llywodraeth Cymru (dydd Mawrth 15 Ionawr, 2019) am y colledion swyddi a ddynodwyd yn y ffatri Ford ym Mhen-y-bont ar Ogwr.

Cododd Suzy Davies, AC Ceidwadwyr Cymreig De Orllewin Cymru, faterion penodol gyda Gweinidog Economi Llywodraeth Cymru, yn galw am ragor o wybodaeth am y gefnogaeth a roddwyd eisoes gan Lywodraeth Cymru, yn ogystal â chymorth posibl ar gyfer y dyfodol.

"Dair blynedd yn ôl dywedwyd wrthym fod Llywodraeth Cymru wedi cefnogi buddsoddiad yn y ffatri yn gyfnewid am o leiaf pum mlynedd o gyflogaeth ddiogel ar gyfer nifer benodol o weithwyr," meddai Mrs Davies.

"Mae Ford wedi derbyn cymorth gwerth dros £42 miliwn gan Lywodraeth Cymru dros y 15 mlynedd diwethaf - ar ba amodau? Faint o swyddi sydd wedi eu sicrhau mewn gwirionedd ar gefn y cymorth a ddilynodd y bygythiad i'r ffatri yn 2016. Er gwaethaf gofyn am fanylion ers hynny, mae Llywodraeth Cymru wedi methu dweud wrthym nifer y swyddi y mae eu cefnogaeth wedi eu gwarantu.

"Hefyd, gwnaeth Mrs Davies wthio Gweinidog yr Economi ynghylch a oedd cynhyrchu peiriant y Ddraig newydd, a wnaed ar gyfer Jaguar Land Rover, yn ddiogel i'r dyfodol yn dilyn pryderon y byddai Jaguar Land Rover yn lleihau cynhyrchu ceir yn y DU.

"Mae'n galonogol clywed y gellir addasu injan y Ddraig i'w ddefnyddio mewn cerbydau hybrid newydd" meddai.

"Fodd bynnag, dim ond tua 125,000 o unedau sy'n cael eu cynhyrchu, hanner y disgwyliad gwreiddiol. Gallai gynyddu i 250,000 o unedau, ond pa ddefnydd fyddai 'gallai' pan fo ofn go iawn yn colli swyddi.

"Fodd bynnag, cadarnhaodd y Gweinidog fy honiad bod Llywodraeth Cymru yn cefnogi bid Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr i ddod â cherbyd 4x4 newydd sbon i'r dref.

"Cadarnhaodd y Gweinidog dros yr Economi fod Llywodraeth Cymru mewn sgyrsiau ar gyfer Projeckt Grenadier, cynllun ar gyfer cerbyd newydd oddi ar y ffordd a gynlluniwyd gan gwmni cemegol ac ynni rhyngwladol INEOS, a gynlluniwyd i lenwi'r bwlch a adawyd gan Land Rover Defender a ddaeth i ben ym 2016.

"Os byddwn yn dod â chynhyrchiad y cerbyd hwnnw i Ben-y-bont ar Ogwr, bydd yn darparu cannoedd ar gannoedd o bobl ac o bosib miloedd yn y gadwyn gyflenwi. Bydd penderfyniad yn cael ei wneud fis nesaf "meddai'r Gweinidog.

"Gallai hyn fod yn newyddion gwych" meddai Mrs Davies. "Ond mae angen i ni barhau i allu dweud wrth ein hetholwyr beth mae Llywodraeth Cymru yn bwriadu ei roi i INEOS, yr hyn y maent yn disgwyl ei gael am yr arian hwnnw, ac yn union yr hyn y bydd 'yn gweithio i gannoedd ar gannoedd o bobl' mewn gwirionedd yn edrych."
