AM continues Craigcefnparc School fight | AC yn parhau i ymladd dros Ysgol Craigcefnparc

Suzy Davies, Welsh Conservative AM for South Wales West, has not given up the fight to save rural schools in her region.

Mrs Davies, who earlier this year objected to Swansea Council’s plans to close Craigcefnparc Primary School, has since sought clarity on how the expectations of the Children’s Commissioner and the Future Generations Commissioner should be reflected in school closure processes.

Following responses from both the commissioners, Mrs Davies has now written to Labour-run Swansea Council formally objecting to their closure plans for both Craigcefnparc School and Ysgol Gynradd Felindre.

“Parents, teachers and, importantly, pupils have not given up the fight to save their school, so neither am I” said Mrs Davies.

“I have written to Swansea Council objecting to their decision to close both Craigcefnparc and Felindre school.

“The council have failed to show that they have followed available, influential advice on what should be considered, in addition to the School Organisation Code, in process of deciding to close down both schools.”

Mrs Davies added “Swansea Council previously signed up to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child some time ago, yet it does not appear they have consulted properly with the children already attending schools which would have to take in pupils from those which would be closed.

“Welsh Government has also passed the Future Generations and Well-being Act which means the council need to consider – and fully explain - the long term impacts of their decisions across a number of fronts, not just education.”

Mrs Davies, who has been working with Mawr ward County Councillor Brigitte Rowlands and community members to save the school, previously called on Swansea Council’s Cabinet to visit Craigcefnparc School before they took their decision to go ahead with their planned closure of the school.

“I have still not see any evidence that the Cabinet took the short trip up the Craigcefnparc before they ploughed ahead with their short-sighted decision to close down the school.”

Nid yw Suzy Davies, AC Ceidwadwyr Cymreig Gorllewin De Cymru, wedi rhoi'r gorau i ymladd i achub ysgolion gwledig yn ei rhanbarth.

Roedd Mrs Davies, a oedd yn gynharach eleni yn gwrthwynebu cynlluniau Cyngor Abertawe i gau Ysgol Gynradd Craigcefnparc, wedi ceisio eglurder ar gyfer sut y dylai disgwyliadau'r Comisiynydd Plant a'r Comisiynydd Cynhyrchiadau Dyfodol gael eu hadlewyrchu ym mhrosesau cau ysgolion.

Yn dilyn ymatebion gan y comisiynwyr, mae Mrs Davies bellach wedi ysgrifennu at Gyngor Abertawe, sy'n cael ei redeg gan Lafur, yn ffurfiol yn gwrthwynebu eu cynlluniau cau ar gyfer Ysgol Craigcefnparc ac Ysgol Gynradd Felindre.

"Nid yw rhieni, athrawon ac, yn bwysicaf, disgyblion wedi rhoi'r gorau i ymladd i achub eu hysgol, felly nid ydw i," meddai Mrs Davies.

"Rwyf wedi ysgrifennu at Gyngor Abertawe yn gwrthwynebu eu penderfyniad i gau ysgol Craigcefnparc a Felindre.

"Mae'r cyngor wedi methu â dangos eu bod wedi dilyn cyngor dylanwadol sydd ar gael ar yr hyn y dylid ei ystyried, yn ychwanegol at y Cod Trefniadaeth Ysgolion, yn y broses o benderfynu cau'r ddwy ysgol."

Ychwanegodd Mrs Davies "Mae Cyngor Abertawe wedi ymuno â Chonfensiwn y Cenhedloedd Unedig ar Hawliau'r Plentyn o'r blaen, ond nid yw'n ymddangos eu bod wedi ymgynghori'n iawn gyda'r plant sydd eisoes yn mynychu ysgolion a fyddai'n gorfod cymryd disgyblion o'r rhai a fyddai'n cau.

"Mae Llywodraeth Cymru hefyd wedi pasio'r Ddeddf Cenedlaethau a Lles yn y Dyfodol, sy'n golygu bod angen i'r cyngor ystyried - ac esbonio'n llawn - effeithiau hirdymor eu penderfyniadau ar draws nifer o agweddau, nid addysg yn unig."

Roedd Mrs Davies, sydd wedi bod yn gweithio gyda Chynghorydd Sir ward Mawr, Brigitte Rowlands ac aelodau'r gymuned i achub yr ysgol, yn flaenorol wedi galw ar Gabinet Cyngor Abertawe i ymweld ag Ysgol Craigcefnparc cyn iddynt benderfynu bwrw ymlaen â'u bwriad i gau'r ysgol.

"Nid wyf wedi gweld unrhyw dystiolaeth bod y Cabinet wedi cymryd y daith fer i fyny Craigcefnparc cyn iddynt fynd ymlaen â'u penderfyniad byr i weld yr ysgol."
